Capital Commentary: 09-19-2026

In an action-packed week marked by volatility, The Numbers navigated a turbulent market with a mixed bag of results across its five equity trades. The standout performer was the S&P 500 Energy Sector SPDR ETF, which generated an impressive return of 3.32%. This gain likely reflects the sector’s robust performance amidst the backdrop of strong global energy demand and rising prices that buoyed energy stocks.

Conversely, our long position in the Nasdaq QQQ Invesco ETF suffered a minor setback with a modest loss of 0.14%. The tech-centric ETF faced headwinds from profit-taking activities and investor skittishness surrounding potential interest rate hikes, given the sector’s interest rate sensitivity.

The S&P 500 Utilities Sector SPDR ETF, traditionally seen as a defensive haven, was no shelter this week. Our long position sustained a notable loss of 3.44%, likely attributed to investor rotation out of safe-haven stocks in favor of more aggressive sectors like energy, especially amid inflationary pressures.

Even more disappointing were our positions in precious metals. The Silver Trust iShares ETF plunged by a substantial 11.79%, while our stake in the Gold SPDR ETF slumped by an even more pronounced 13.88%. These downfalls appear to be a consequence of the strengthening U.S. dollar and persistent inflation concerns, which have reduced the appeal of non-yielding assets like silver and gold.

Taken together, The Numbers’ portfolio experienced a slight overall loss of 0.10%, a result which lagged 0.46% behind the positive performance of the S&P 500, which returned 0.35% over the same timeframe. With only 33% of trades yielding positive outcomes, it was a challenging week for The Numbers.

While the week’s results didn’t quite hit the mark as intended, it’s crucial to remain focused on broader market trends and maintain a diversified strategy. With the cyclical energy sector showing strength and tech stocks struggling amid potential rate hikes, shifts in strategy could be on the horizon to better navigate the evolving financial landscape. Overall, periods of market transition like this can also present valuable learning opportunities, setting the stage for more informed investment decisions in the future.
