Capital Commentary: 05-23-2026

In a dynamic week of trading, The Numbers took a proactive stance by going long on a series of well-established stocks, achieving a mixed bag of results. The highlight of the week was Apple, where our long position reaped a notable 9.26% gain. Apple’s recent strides in expanding its product line, coupled with strong demand for its latest iPhone model, likely fueled investor optimism, boosting share prices significantly.

Meanwhile, our confidence in the semiconductor industry’s growth led us to go long on the VanEck Semiconductor ETF, which rewarded us with a solid 3.63% return. This sector continues to ride the wave of technological innovation and demand for chips, as industries from automotive to consumer electronics seek ever more computational power.

Not to be overlooked, Amazon.com also contributed positively to the portfolio with a 2.33% increase. Despite headwinds in consumer spending, Amazon’s diverse revenue streams, including its robust cloud services division, appear to sustain investor interest and bolster its stock value.

The S&P 500 Consumer Staples Sector SPDR ETF provided a more modest return of 1.13%. This ETF gave a safe haven in uncertain times, reflecting a steady performance typically expected from consumer staples, which tend to maintain demand irrespective of economic climate.

On the other end of the spectrum, our decision to go long on Walmart didn’t pan out as anticipated, resulting in a 5.89% loss. This downturn may have been caused by shifting consumer behaviors and an increasingly competitive retail environment where loyalty is hard-won and pricing pressures are relentless.

Summing up, the total gain across these stock selections was a slight 0.66%, yet it still lagged behind the broader S&P 500’s 0.95% gain for the week. While our portfolio underperformed the benchmark by 0.28%, we’re encouraged by the fact that 78% of our trades landed in the profit zone, reaffirming our strategic approach. As we navigate fluid market conditions, our focus remains on identifying opportunities with strong upside potential while managing downside risks effectively.
